Information Commissioner's Office finds three county councils in breach of the Data Protection Act after losing data on children

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has taken action against three county councils for breaching the Data Protection Act.
It said ‘a systemic lack of staff training on how to handle personal information' led to the loss of sensitive personal information relating to thousands of children at the London Borough of Barnet, West Sussex County Council and Buckinghamshire County Council.
Barnet Council reported a loss of the details on over 9,000 children and members of their families when an unencrypted, non-password protected USB stick and CDs were stolen from an employee's home.

Stolen laptop leads to the loss of details of around 13,000 UK dairy farmers

The data of around 13,000 UK dairy farmers has been lost following the theft of a laptop from DairyCo, part of the Agriculture and Horticulture development board.
The Farmers Guardian reported that the laptop contained names, addresses, quota details, transaction reference numbers and in some cases phone numbers of every DairyCo levy-payer. It was stolen when left in a car on the 9th June.

Details of 24,000 people lost following laptop theft from training company

Training company A4e has written to clients in Hull and Leicester following the loss of the details of over 24,000 people on a stolen laptop.
It claimed that the data lost 'did not contain any banking or credit information' and it advised that the risk of illegal use is low. The data was held on the personal computer of an A4e employee stolen in what police believe was an opportunistic domestic burglary.
